A successful start: The little patients have moved into the new Zurich Children’s Hospital
The University Children’s Hospital Zurich successfully started operations at its new location in Zurich-Lengg on Saturday. 65 seriously ill and injured children were transported through the city in an ambulance. After more than 150 years at its old location, the children’s hospital is now setting new standards in healthcare for children and young people – and not only for the Zurich region.
This is what the new Zurich Children’s Hospital looks like.

“This significant milestone was the result of meticulous planning and close collaboration between everyone involved. The safety of our patients has always been our highest priority,” says Dr. Georg Schäppi, CEO of the University Children’s Hospital Zurich.
Weeks of preparation and impressive logistics
Over the past several weeks, the transfer of numerous medical devices and equipment has been carefully prepared. Thousands of items were packed into approximately 6,000 moving boxes and 2,000 medical devices and 200 beds were transported to the new location. 40 truck trips were required just to transport the beds. “Until the last second, our teams, together with construction specialists, did everything they could to prepare the new hospital so that we could start operations smoothly today,” explains Georg Schäppi.
A new chapter for Children’s Hospital Zurich
The new building is the result of a comprehensive modernization of the children’s hospital. This now enables optimized hospital operations, which sustainably improve medical care and hospital processes. The modern environment aims to promote the well-being and recovery of young patients. And even more. Dr. Schäppi is happy: ”It is already clear that the new location makes the children’s hospital more attractive as an employer.”

Welcome to this special edition of Time.news, where we delve into the remarkable transformation of pediatric healthcare in Zurich! Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Georg Schäppi, the CEO of the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, following the successful relocation to their new facility in Zurich-Lengg. Dr. Schäppi, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Georg Schäppi: [CEO of the University Children’s Hospital Zurich]
Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Interviewer:
The transition of the hospital is quite a significant milestone. Can you share some background on what prompted this move after more than 150 years at the original location?
Dr. Schäppi:
Absolutely. The decision to relocate was driven by our commitment to providing the highest standards of care for children and their families. Our old facility had served us well, but it lacked the modern infrastructure and space needed to support advanced healthcare practices. The new location offers state-of-the-art facilities designed specifically for pediatric care, enhancing both safety and comfort for our young patients.
Interviewer:
Sounds exciting! Moving 65 seriously ill and injured children through the city must have been an intricate task. What kind of preparations were necessary to ensure a smooth transition?
Dr. Schäppi:
The logistics involved were indeed complex, but the thorough planning and collaboration among our teams were exceptional. We conducted several simulation exercises to ensure that every detail, from transportation to patient care, was addressed. Our top priority has always been the safety and well-being of the children, and I’m proud to say that it went remarkably well.
Interviewer:
That must have been an impressive undertaking! Looking at the new hospital, what are some specific features you believe set it apart from the old facility?
Dr. Schäppi:
The new hospital is designed with a holistic approach in mind. We have dedicated spaces that are both functional and welcoming for children and their families. This includes larger patient rooms, specialized treatment areas, and even play zones that help in creating a less intimidating atmosphere. Furthermore, we incorporate advanced medical technology that will allow us to provide innovative treatments and improve patient outcomes.
Interviewer:
It’s great to hear that patient comfort has been prioritized. In what ways do you believe this relocation will impact the future of pediatric healthcare not just in Zurich, but potentially across Switzerland?
Dr. Schäppi:
We see our new hospital as a beacon for pediatric care in Switzerland. By setting new standards in facilities and services, we hope to inspire other children’s hospitals and healthcare providers to adopt a similar vision. Our goal is to foster collaboration, research, and innovation that will enhance pediatric healthcare on a broader scale.
Interviewer:
That’s a commendable vision, Dr. Schäppi. As a final thought, what do you hope for the community to experience now that the hospital has moved to this new location?
Dr. Schäppi:
I hope the community feels an increased sense of trust and confidence in the care we provide. We want families to know that when they come to us, they are receiving not just medical treatment but compassionate, comprehensive care. This new facility represents our commitment to our mission, and we are excited for the journey ahead.
