Oh Mi-sook lives in Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. She established herself as a country house interior designer 10 years ago when her country house remodeling project became a hot topic, and she wanted to create a house that could prepare for environmental issues. While looking for a country house where I could experiment with challenging elements, I ended up buying my current house after being contacted by a local grandmother. As I approach retirement, what are the elements of a country house that has been renovated little by little?
Oh Mi-sook thought that water was a waste when she saw villagers pouring tap water into their gardens. We used tap water only for drinking, and thought it would be better to collect rainwater for household chores, so we built a rainwater storage tank to recycle rainwater and ended up with two taps. It’s not just this. Since it was a country house, what she thought of in case of a power outage was none other than an ‘induction oven.’ It is a device that does not require the use of electricity because it can be cooked over a fire using firewood, and is another eco-friendly element of this house and the identity of a country house.

Ms. Oh Mi-sook said that the advantage of remodeling a country house is that it is much cheaper than new construction. Regarding the budget issue, which is an important consideration when purchasing a home after retirement, remodeling a country house is one way to save money. This house, with its attractive blue gate and pink roof, was originally an old Hanok. This house, which was sensuously reborn through remodeling with traditional-style ceiling rafters, a Nordic-style kitchen, and a Mediterranean-style fireplace, serves as a comfortable home for the owner to live in the present and fill the future, adding to his happiness.
“I thought I did a good job renovating the house with my mom in mind.”
There is a special space in the client’s house, and it is none other than the ‘mother’s room’. Oh Mi-sook created a ‘mom’s room’ while renovating her house to create a space where her mother, who had a hard time raising seven children, could rest comfortably. For the elderly mother, the mattress was laid low, the threshold between the bathroom and the room was removed, and the built-in closet door was installed as a traditional Korean house door, showing consideration for the mother to have a comfortable stay. In this way, we visit a country house that has been reborn and filled with the owner’s meticulous love.
A ‘ㅁ’ shaped house where the second act of a retired couple’s life begins.
Hong Ki-bong and Yoo Eun-mi live in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. A couple who were born and raised in Busan and lived in the city their entire lives came to Jeongseon, Gangwon-do to live a rural life after retirement. Husband Hong Ki-bong, who was so busy with work throughout his youth that he had little time to sleep, and wife Yoo Eun-mi, who lived at home without being able to see her husband properly. What will the new life be like for a couple who dreamed of life after retirement and prepared carefully for many years, from certification to country life preparation?

The secret for couples who have been together all day after retirement to live like newlyweds without fighting is to prepare their own space. Although it has a ‘ㅁ’ shaped structure where all spaces are connected, each corner becomes an independent space, making the kitchen a private space for the wife and the living room across from it for the husband. In addition, the kitchen hidden inside is the kitchen where the wife cooks, and the island table outside is the kitchen where the husband bakes, so they share the cooking without intrusion. Although the space is divided, the sound is communicated, which not only ensures the feeling of being together but also allows each person to live separately, adding to the couple’s satisfaction.

The owner and his wife built a house to focus on each other after decades of busy work. The couple was fully prepared to start a new life in a new place. Her husband, Hong Ki-bong, who believed that landscaping was essential to rural life, obtained a landscape technician’s license and handcrafted a curved garden that matched the square house. In addition, I prepared for life after retirement step by step by obtaining a baking certificate for my wife and new neighbors, and a nursing care worker certificate to take care of each other as we age. Like the garden that was completed by hand-drawing the plan and laying down each flagstone and gravel, you can get a glimpse of the couple’s affection for life after retirement.
