72 year old girls, three is better

Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, a house that can be found at a glance because it is the only flat roof in a rural neighborhood full of gable roofs. Here, you can meet 72-year-old girls of the same age who live in prefabricated families. They say it wasn’t easy for three people with different personalities and tastes to live together… .

This unique family started with two people, Jaesik Shim and Hyeok Lee. We’ve been friends and family for 60 years now. Even though the two did not live in the same house, they went to school, work, and everywhere else together. One day when I was in my mid-fifties. Mr. Jaesik, who was tired of social life and meeting many people, decided to go into the mountains alone and live like a natural person. At the time, Hye-ok lived with her mother in Seoul, but she suddenly passed away and she was left to live alone. Their construction journal began when they decided that if they were alone, they would rather build a house and live together.

Hye-ok said that although European-style houses were popular at the time, a modern house caught her eye. After visiting a designer I liked and making a request, construction began. However, there were many complaints because the shape of the house was different from the surrounding houses. A single-story house with a horizontally long flat roof. It had a unique appearance at the time, with a long window on one side, so some people thought it was a restaurant. The owner created a veranda inside, divided it into a main building and an annex, and created a back garden to capture the feel of a hanok. Although the house was designed 16 years ago, the kitchen is a face-to-face kitchen, which is popular these days. It also has two faucets for convenience.

I was wondering if we could just build it and live for the two of us, but somehow we ended up adding one more member to our family. Eight years ago, Gyeong-ok came to this house. When her husband passed away, Gyeong-ok put her house on the market, but as the house was quickly sold, she needed a place to stay. Jae-sik and Hye-ok are said to have extended their hand to Gyeong-ok, who was worried about not wanting to leave her beloved neighborhood. Since there were only two people living in the 60 pyeong house, I gave them the room for a while. As we stayed like that, we got along well and ended up living in this house together.

Three people who say that no matter how much they are friends, each person needs to make an effort to live together. It is Jaesik’s responsibility to prepare a household account book and manage living expenses. Gyeong-ok, who is good with her hands, was in charge of cooking and plants. Hye-ok, who was once a factory manager, is in charge of the family’s equipment department! Thanks to everyone playing their role well, we live as family and take care of each other even though we are not related by blood. Now, these three people want to be with more people, so they opened their yard and house. We explore a house that resembles a youth classroom for 72-year-old girls, which is said to be filled with a variety of activities.

An experimental home of two men who have been together for 45 years

A tree-like house rising between narrow alleys in the old city center of Seoul. It has a strange appearance that is a mixture of concrete and wood, so it stands out in the neighborhood. The twin houses, which stand side by side, were built by two men who had been friends for 45 years to live together.

Mr. Jong-il and Mr. Jeong-in grew up together in the same neighborhood since childhood. After living together as friends and brothers for over 40 years, one day, Jeong-in became a wild goose father, and that relationship deepened. Mr. Jeongin had to return to Korea alone and work, leaving his family behind in the United States. He had a lot of worries because he needed a house to live in Seoul right away. Finally, Mr. Jongil needed an office. Jong-il, who trusted Jeong-in, who was an architect, suggested to him that they build a house together. It only took a week to see the land and sign the contract! That’s how architect Jeong In’s experiment took its first step.

Mr. Jeong-in took on the challenge of designing two houses to be built on 35 pyeong of land. He said he used this house as an experiment, and his goal was to build a unique structure that incorporated a wooden house into a concrete frame. However, this is the old city center of Seoul. It is a land with strict legal conditions due to the high density of surrounding buildings. Mr. Jeong-in, who did not give in to this, actually reflected this point in the design…

A twin house was created by first creating an outline in accordance with building regulations, dividing it in half, and then rotating the spaces in an alternating manner. The problem was that the house was built to fit the conditions of the land, so the interior design was so complicated that there was almost no 90-degree angle. From the gable roof with different angles on both sides to the shape of the space on each floor and the shape of the stairs, some workers gave up on construction. Because the construction and design did not match accurately on site, the formwork had to be torn down and redone as many as three times. It was only possible to complete it thanks to Jeong-in claiming to be the site manager and going to work every day.

A twin house built thanks to trust and reliance on each other. However, no matter how close we were, we couldn’t compromise on one thing: ‘temperature’. Mr. Jeong-in had the philosophy that each space should have a different temperature depending on the lifestyle. For that reason, he insisted that concrete should not be insulated, but Mr. Jong-il did not accept this experiment. Thus, a family of twins, identical on the outside but fraternal on the inside, was born! Jeong-in maintains a different temperature in each space on each floor, but Jong-il always stays at a warm temperature wherever he is.

The house has been built, but the two are now planning another experiment. We are preparing to open our home to young artists in need of artistic inspiration. Two people who rely on each other and walk the stairs of life together. We explore the experimental house of a friend of 45 years.
