On the 7th, prosecutors investigating the death of Marine Corps Corporal Chae Mo searched and seized Marine Corps officials, including former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun. In particular, it was confirmed that the prosecution conducted a search and seizure of the High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office (Corruption Investigation Office) and secured forensic data on former division commander Lim’s cell phone. An official from the Corruption Investigation Office said, “As far as I know, this is the first time that the prosecution has conducted a search and seizure of the Corruption Investigation Office since its launch.”

According to Dong-A Ilbo’s coverage on the 7th, the Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office’s dedicated investigation team for the death of Corporal Chae (team leader Yu Do-yoon, 1st Deputy Director) conducted a search and seizure of former division commander Lim and Lieutenant Colonel Lee Yong-min on this day. The Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office visited Lieutenant Colonel Lee’s office in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do around 1:00 PM on this day and secured seven pieces of evidence, including the cell phone and work notebook he is currently using.

In addition to Lieutenant Colonel Lee, the prosecution simultaneously conducted searches and seizures of those involved in the case of Corporal Chae’s death in the line of duty, including former 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun. The prosecution said, “In order to secure relevant evidence, we obtained a search and seizure warrant from the court in accordance with criminal law procedures and conducted a search and seizure of the suspect and others involved in the case.” Lieutenant Colonel Lee objected, saying that if a duplicate search and seizure was conducted on the same charges even though the search and seizure had already been conducted during the police investigation stage, he would go through quasi-appeal procedures.

The prosecution is said to have sent an investigation team to the Corruption Investigation Office to present a search and seizure warrant and secured forensic details on former division commander Lim’s cell phone. An official from the Ministry of Public Prosecution said, “It was a search and seizure in the form of cooperation between agencies. I understand that this is the first search and seizure since the launch of the Ministry of Public Prosecution.”

In July of this year, more than a year after the incident, the Gyeongbuk Police Agency sent six on-site commanders, including Lieutenant Colonel Lee, without detention on charges of professional negligence manslaughter, and three people, including former division commander Lim, were sent back with ‘no charges’. However, the bereaved family objected to the results of the investigation and submitted an appeal. The prosecution, which took over the case, has reclassified former division commander Lim and others as suspects and is investigating.
