[동행] ‘The support of our family, Byeong-kwon’

Episode 488, ‘Our Family’s Support, Byeong-kwon’ will be aired on KBS’ ‘Companion’, which airs at 6:10 pm today (4th).

√ Byeong-gwon, the pillar of the three brothers in Sanpo Village

Sanpo Village, where most of the land is submerged, and there is no land for farming or plenty of jobs. Byeongkwon (18), the eldest son of three brothers who was born and raised in an old house in Sanpo Village, is an indispensable figure to the village and his family. Byeong-kwon runs to help whenever and wherever he needs help. Byeong-kwon is a young but dependable head of the family who takes care of his younger siblings and works part-time at a restaurant in place of his sick parents. Since helping his family became part of Byeong-kwon’s daily life since he was young, he became interested in helping others. As a result of working hard in hot and cold conditions at home without a desk, I was accepted into the sports rehabilitation department at a university right before I graduated from high school. It would not have been enough to feel joy at the news of being accepted to university, but Byeong-kwon was actually distraught. Financial issues are a concern, but they also worry about the families who will remain at home after moving into the college dormitory. His mother’s heart breaks as she sees Byeong-kwon worried about his family even after being accepted into the university he so desperately wanted, and Byeong-kwon comforts his mother by telling her that it’s okay.

√ A mother with heavy shoulders on behalf of an alcoholic father

Byeong-kwon’s family didn’t put a lot of burden on him from the beginning. Byeong-kwon’s father Guik (49) and mother Yeongnam (44) were born and raised in Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do and married through matchmaking. We promised ourselves that we would make a good living through farming despite our poor circumstances, but it did not work out as we wanted. As he got older, farming became less and less common, and my father suffered from depression and alcoholism, and was repeatedly admitted and discharged from the hospital. My mother worked at a Korean restaurant for over 10 years to take responsibility for the family’s livelihood in place of my father, but recently, her cervical disc worsened and she had no choice but to quit her job. In addition, the second child, Yonggwon (12), suffers from intellectual disability and needs a lot of help. As he grew older and became more difficult to control, his mother’s shoulders became heavier. The person who alleviates the mother’s burden is her dependable eldest son, Byeong-kwon. Instead of being a mother, she took care of the family by looking after Yong-kwon, who is intellectually disabled, and playing with the cute youngest child, Shin-kwon (8). Mom says that thanks to Byeong-kwon, the burden on her shoulders has been eased, but the burden on her heart has doubled. As a mother, I am trying to find paid work whenever I can, despite my illness, saying I will at least help pay for my son’s school fees.

√ Byeong-kwon’s house may collapse at any time

Byeong-kwon’s house is a very old house where Byeong-kwon has lived since his grandfather’s time. It’s so old that it’s so worn out that there’s no place in good condition. There are mouse holes all over the house and the boiler is broken, so Byeong-kwon, who lives in a small room, has to survive the winter with just an electric blanket. They say that every time you turn on the water, water rises from the kitchen floor, and when it rains, water comes from the ceiling and even the new wallpaper gets wet. Byeong-kwon’s house is in need of repairs in one or two places, and he has to sleep in fear every night because he doesn’t know when it will collapse. Since the restrooms are old and cold, traditional restrooms, especially young Shin-kwon, often uses the restroom at the nearby community center. In this situation, I want to move to another place right away, but the cost is so high that I can’t even dream of it. My mother lives in an old house with the feeling of walking on thin ice every day, but she is fortunate to have Byeong-kwon who takes care of her family even in these difficult circumstances. Byeong-kwon is spending this winter vigorously for his beloved family.
