Lithuania is one of the three Baltic countries located on the Baltic Sea coast. This journey begins in Klaipeda, a port city in the west. Klaipeda, the only port connected to Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, has an exotic feel.
We arrived at Neringa, a long sandy peninsula, by ferry from a port crowded with tourists. It is a place where the legend of a giant girl who created sand dunes to protect coastal villages lives on. Many stories remain as legends about the Curonian Spit, which was named after the girl. We arrived at the Hill of Witches by walking through a forest filled with legends. Make a wish at a place where each statue has its own story.
Next to Neringa is a small fishing village, Nida. This place stops people with its unique weathervane. They say you can tell the identity of the owner by looking at the weather vane hung in each house. What kind of people live in Nida, a small town located on the coast?
Leaving Klaipeda, we headed to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Head to the Republic of Užupis, a country of unique artists located in Vilnius. Artist Village created its own constitution and declared itself an independent republic on April 1, 1997. They say that every year on April 1st, it starts to operate like a real country. It looks suspicious at first glance, but the more you get to know it, the warmer it becomes. You will have a fun time.
It’s time to have fun starting in the morning and then get hungry before you know it. We head to a Michelin restaurant that has recently become a hot topic for using various ingredients from Lithuania. The variety of flavors that are pleasing to the eyes and mouth will make you smile. The last dessert was ice cream topped with ants! Kalin Park takes on the challenge with her eyes tightly closed. What do Lithuanian ants taste like?
This time, we go to Zervynos village, a small village in Zukia National Park. We meet local residents, collect oriole mushrooms, Lithuania’s national mushroom, and spend a warm time kayaking along winding waterways.
Leave the peaceful forest and head to Šiauliai. Another name for Šiaulei is the City of the Cross. I leave a cross prepared from afar on the Hill of Crosses, which contains many wishes. The journey ends with warm people and great natural scenery, leaving traces in Lithuania, the mother’s hometown.
