“I left because I hated the temple, but the temple chased me.”
Geun-Woo Jeong (42), who was called the ‘Devil’s Second Baseman’ during his playing days, wrote this on his blog when Manager Seong-Geun Kim (82) was appointed as the new head coach of the baseball team on the baseball entertainment program on which he was appearing in late 2022. The relationship between the two began at SK Wyverns in the late 2000s. As soon as Coach Kim took office, he trained young players such as Jeong Geun-woo and Choi Jeong as ‘Fungo of Hell.’ Based on their growth, SK became the strongest team and won the Korean Series three times.
Jeong Geun-woo transferred to Hanwha in 2014, but when Coach Kim took over as Hanwha’s head coach the following year, it seemed like he was chasing after Jung. And this became his third meeting. No matter what they say, the two have a relationship like father and son. Jeong Geun-woo said, “Director is another father to me. He raised me from an ordinary person into a good player. “If I hadn’t met the director, Jeong Geun-woo wouldn’t be where he is today,” he said.
After reuniting with Director Kim, Jeong Geun-woo regained his healthy body. After finishing his 16-year professional career, he became discouraged from exercising for a while. He didn’t even stretch. Instead, he often had drinks with friends he had not met during his playing career. Meanwhile, his body was swelling inexplicably.
But he is back to his old sharp self. Although it is an entertainment program, he trains hard under Director Kim. He participates in training three times a week. He faithfully carries out running, defensive training, and batting training. He said, “I exercise for three hours at a time. “He can maintain a toned body without having to go to the fitness center separately,” he said.
Even when I come home, I take an empty swing. When I have free time, I do push-ups and do abdominal exercises. Jeong Geun-woo said, “It’s been four years since he retired, but he seems to still have a lingering attachment to baseball. “It’s an entertainment program, but I want to show fans that Jeong Geun-woo is still alive.”
He continues his connection with baseball through several channels. He recently opened a new YouTube channel specializing in baseball, ‘Jeong Geun-woo’s Baseball Life’. Last year, she also served as coach of the Korean women’s baseball team, assisting coach Yang Sang-moon. When he has time, he travels around and donates his talents. Earlier this month, he also served as a public relations ambassador for the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education.
He is very interested in youth exercise and health and is also a ‘figure dad.’ His youngest child, Subin Yang (12), is a figure skater. Subin won a gold medal in the women’s 12 and under figure skating competition at the National Winter Games held in Gangwon-do earlier this year. When her daughter cried after winning her gold medal, he, who normally didn’t cry, turned around and wiped a few tears from her eyes. He said, “Figure athletes cannot eat whatever they want because it is important to maintain their body. “As a parent, my heart aches when I see them exercising so hard,” he said.
He said, “I have received so much from baseball,” saying that he is experiencing small happiness while living a busy life. “I think I should live by giving back and giving as much as I can,” he said. “I will continue to do my best so that people can hear that I am a person who worked hard and is a good person.”
