This week (October 14th – October 18th) EBS 1TV current affairs and culture program ‘Oh, Kang Hae-young!’ Five episodes will be broadcast.
The travel keyword that comes to mind these days is ‘Kang Hae-young’? It looks like a person’s name at first glance, but it is not a person’s name. It is said that the three neighboring regions at the end of Jeollanam-do, Gangjin, Haenam, and Yeongam, are called ‘Ganghaeyoung’ by taking only the first letters.
Although it is a neighboring area, ‘Kang Haeyoung’ attracts people with its different charms. In particular, fall is the time when you can truly feel Kang Hae-young’s true self.
From Gangjin, full of traces of fertility, to Haenam, the land of abundance, to Yeongam, home to the legend of a magical rock, let’s go to ‘Kang Haeyoung’ to enjoy the taste and style of the South Island!
Gangjin, known as ‘the most comfortable ferry’ at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula, is a land blessed with wide fields and a sea of life.
In particular, Gangjin is the place of exile for Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, the greatest Silhak scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. It is said that in Gangjin, you can experience the beautiful scenery of Gangjin and the traces of culture and life that flourished with fertility through the ‘Namdo Exile Road’, which has a total of 4 courses.
A journey that began at ‘Dasan Chodang’, where Dasan Jeong Yak-yong lived for 10 of his 18 years of exile. After walking the path of contemplation, which is a compilation of over 500 books, we arrived at the tavern ‘Sajae’ where Dasan stayed during his first exile. There is a special meal that can only be tasted here.
Ahn Gyeong-sook is said to have become the owner of this tavern eight years ago. She is making the so-called ‘Dasan Table’ based on the ‘millet rice’ and ‘mallow miso soup’ that the teacher reportedly ate at the time, and is informing those who visit Gangjin of the teacher’s spirit. Enjoy the simple taste of Gangjin Baekban, recreated with fresh ingredients from Gangjin.
Baekun-dong located under Wolchulsan Mountain. Here, Hyeonjeong Lee has been passing down the taste of tea that Dasan enjoyed for generations. With her, we taste the tea that eased Dasan’s worries during his lonely exile.
The final destination is Gaudo Island, the only inhabited island in Gangjin. There, I met a special family who was out on an outing. Eunyoung Lee was born in Hwanghae-do, North Korea, but chose to go to Korea 25 years ago. She met her current husband, Kim Seong-ho, in Gangjin 13 years ago and lives as a fisherman raising abalone.
A delicious meal made with abalone that he raised himself for his younger brother who came to Korea with him three years ago. In addition, his younger brother Lee Geum-hee started cooking ‘bean meat’ to show him the taste of the hometown he left behind.
Let’s go on a trip with travel writer Bae Na-young as Gangjin, a ‘good-hearted’ person full of human affection.
