The yacht, which was carrying 31 tourists and 13 crew members, sent a distress signal at around 5:30 a.m., according to a statement from the governor of the Red Sea province.
The yacht, owned by an Egyptian national, was carrying people from Egypt, the United States, Belgium, Ireland, China, Great Britain, Poland, Slovakia, Finland, Spain, Switzerland and Germany.
The yacht set off on a multi-day diving trip from Ghalib port near Marsaalam in the country’s southeast on Sunday and was due to dock in the city of Hurghada, 200 kilometers north of its departure point, on Friday.
Some survivors were rescued by plane, while others were taken to safety on a warship, Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi said.
“Intensive search operations are underway in coordination with the navy and armed forces,” Hanafi added.
Initial reports of the incident said the yacht was hit by a “sudden and large wave”, causing it to capsize within five to seven minutes. Some passengers were unable to escape as they were in their cabins at the time, the governor said.
The yacht had passed its most recent safety inspection in March and no technical problems had been reported.
This month, 30 people were rescued from a sinking diving boat off the Red Sea’s Daedalus Reef. In June, around 20 French tourists were safely evacuated before their boat sank in a similar accident.
Last year, three British tourists died in a fire on their yacht.
