At least 17 people were killed in a tanker truck explosion in south-west Nigeria on Friday. According to a spokeswoman for the authorities, the accident happened near the town of Isara on the busy expressway between the towns of Lagos and Ibadan during a risky overtaking maneuver. Only three of the victims could be identified – the others burned beyond recognition.
Serious accidents on the roads of the West African state are not uncommon, since many drivers are driving at excessive speeds despite the sometimes poor roads. Last September, 23 people died when a tanker truck overturned and exploded in the city of Lokoja.
