A serious accident caused dramatic scenes at a horse race in Newcastle. 18-year-old jockey Rhys Elliott suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital.

Young and promising jockey Rhys Elliott suffered serious injuries in a dramatic fall during a race in Newcastle, England, on Tuesday evening. As “Michael Dods Racing” wrote on Platform X, Elliott was immediately taken to the hospital.

During the “Free Digital Racecard” event, Elliott and his gelding Masterpainter led the field for a long time until there was a collision with third-placed Rowan Scott on the home straight. The collision caused the young talent to fall seriously, prompting emergency services to intervene immediately. “Michael Dods Racing” wrote on Tuesday evening about Elliott’s health: “He has a ruptured lung and small fractures to his neck and spine, but the good news is that they are healing and he hopes to be out of the hospital soon.”

The team added: “Of course it could have been much worse and both Rhys and the horse are very lucky.” Paul Brierley, Elliott’s agent, thanked all supporters for the many and warm messages. Race management immediately investigated the incident and concluded that it was an unfortunate accident through no fault of anyone else.
