In the first eight months of the current financial year (2023-24), the government has repaid foreign debt, including interest and principal, to the tune of $203 million. Of this, the interest is 80.59 US dollars and the original is 122.40 billion dollars.

During the same period of last year, i.e. in the first eight months, Bangladesh paid off foreign debt of 142.41 billion dollars. In other words, the amount of foreign debt repayment increased by 61 million dollars in 8 months within a year.

This picture was seen in the updated data released by the Economic Relations Department (ERD) on Monday (March 25).

According to ERD sources, the interest payment is mainly responsible for the increase in the cost of loan repayment. Interest paid in eight months was $806 million (806 million). During the same period of the previous financial year, 40.3 million dollars were paid towards interest.

According to ERD, loan commitments to development partners increased in the first eight months of the current fiscal year. Development partners have committed $7.2 billion in loans during this period. It was 178 million dollars in the same period of last financial year. In the current financial year, the target is to realize commitments of 9.92 billion dollars from various development aid agencies.

According to ERD data, the largest number of commitments received in the first eight months of the current fiscal year came from ADB. A commitment of 2.62 billion dollars has been received from this organization. Besides, 202 billion dollars from Japan, 141 billion dollars from the World Bank have been received.

According to the data of ERD, in the first eight months of the current financial year, the foreign currency discount was 499.7 billion dollars. In the same period of the previous financial year, the amount of exemption was 487 million dollars. ADB has released the most money during this period. The company has written off $1.3 billion. Japan has released 104 million dollars. After that, the World Bank released 877.8 million dollars. Besides, Russia has deducted 80.5 million dollars and China 36.17 million dollars.

In the last financial year (July-June), Bangladesh paid 267 million dollars to development partners. Out of this, 93.56 million has been paid as interest, and 1.73 million dollars has been paid in principal. Payments will increase to $3.56 billion in the current financial year. In the next two financial years, it will increase to 421 crore and 472 crore respectively.
