230,000 public employees increased by 6 cents: increase or insult?

On November 1, 230,000 public employees will see their salaries increase… by 6 cents. A “differential compensation” that aims purely and simply to keep agents above the minimum wage. There is no effort to go further, so this increase is seen by the unions as a provocation.

Three francs and sixpence, as they say… This is the government’s response to civil servants whose salary is just below the minimum wage. On November 1st these 230,000 agents will benefit from a ridiculous bonus, to say the least, which will increase their pay by 6 cents to avoid wages below the legal minimum. This increase is defined by the unions as a “sign of contempt”, and it is difficult to deny them: at a time when inflation undermines the purchasing power of the French, these few cents seem more like a grotesque symbol than a viable solution .

The announcement, released byAfp and confirmed by the General Directorate of Administration and Public Function (DGAFP), comes the increase in the minimum wage to 1,801.80 euros gross in the month of November. The agents concerned remained stagnant at 1,801.74 euros gross. This small difference is made up of a “differential allowance”, a one-time bonus that does not change the base salary in any way. For the Civil Service of the CGT, this decision does not respond “in any way to the wage emergency”, while the other unions are asking for overall increases, such as those for 2022 (+3.5%) and 2023 (+1.5%).

The announcement sparked a reaction on the networks. Humor is the kindness of desperation, it seems:

As the cost of living explodes, this symbolic increase once again reflects the government’s worrying indifference towards those who ensure the day-to-day functioning of the country.
