At least 24 inmates were killed and more than 40 others were injured in gun battles between inmates inside a prison in Guayas state in southwestern Ecuador, authorities announced.
The local police officer, General Fausto Buenano, said in a tweet published by the coastal state government on its official Twitter account that the clashes between prisoners left “24 dead and 42 injured.”

In recent months, Ecuadorian prisons have seen repeated violence between rival gangs vying to control drug trafficking, according to authorities.
In February, simultaneous riots in the country’s four main prisons killed 79 people, some of whom were executed.
According to the Office of Complaints in Ecuador, 103 murders were committed in the country’s prisons in 2020.
