A spokesman for the Secretary General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, confirmed that 3.2 million children under the age of five are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition this year in Sudan.
“Among these children, more than 700,000 are likely to suffer from severe malnutrition,” Dujarric said at a press conference.
Dujarric continued, “Sudan is witnessing the largest child displacement crisis in the world, as 5 million children have become homeless due to the fighting. Most children leave their homes with only their clothes and walk with their mothers for days, sometimes up to 20 days, to reach a camp, in search of safety, food and shelter.” .
He added, “As the conflict continues, families and communities remain stuck in the middle and in hard-to-reach areas, under the pressure of violence and suffering. Areas are likely to worsen within Sudan, as the risk of poverty and death increases.
Sudan is facing a humanitarian crisis and famine situations are worsening in several regions, due to the intersection of various factors, including armed conflicts, economic crises, climate change, and weak infrastructure, and the increasing risk that Famine will spread, especially in remote and conflict areas.
