Pudukottai: Police have arrested three people, including two boys, in connection with the murder of an SSI near Keeranur.
Bhuminathan, 56, who served as SSI at Nawalpattu police station in Trichy district; Early yesterday morning, while chasing a bike to catch goat thieves, he was hacked to death by the same thieves near Keeranur, Pudukkottai district. To catch the killers, four special forces were formed. During the investigation, clues were lost on the murder of Bhuminathan by the goat thieves and the last information he gave on his mobile phone. Following this, police arrested Manikandan, 19, and two boys aged 9 – 14 from Togur area near Kallanai in Thanjavur district early yesterday morning. From them, the scythe and bike used to kill Bhuminathan were confiscated. The three arrested were kept at the Mandaiyur police station and interrogated. The arrested were identified as a 9-year-old boy studying in Class V and a 14-year-old boy studying in Class VIII. Both are believed to be relatives of Manikandan, who has a habit of stealing sheep.
Trichy DIG, Saravana Sundar Interview: Bhuminathan, who chased away the thieves, informed the station and called two policemen for help. The murder took place because they were late in arriving. Back then, only Manikandan was drunk. The other two are not intoxicated. Fearing that they would be caught by the police, the three men confessed to the murder together. Only the first accused Manikandan will be produced in the Keeranur court. The other two boys will be produced before the Juvenile and Juvenile Justice Board and placed in a juvenile correctional facility. On the part of the police, based on the charge sheet and documents filed in court, the maximum sentence will be imposed on the offender. Thus, he said.
Minister consoles: Urban Development Minister Nehru, SSI, visited his wife Geetha and relatives yesterday at Bhuminathan’s house in Cholamanagar, near Nawalpattu in Thiruverumbur. He said, ‘The relief announced by the Tamil Nadu government will be given soon.’
