Destroyed building in Ukraine after bombings in July 2022

A residential building in the city of Kramatorsk, in eastern Ukraine, was hit by a Russian missile, leaving at least three dead and about 20 injured. The attack took place on the night of last Wednesday (01).

In a Facebook post, a police officer says: “At least eight apartment buildings were damaged. One of them was completely destroyed. There may still be people under the rubble.”

The city is about 55km from Bakhmut, a city that has been the focus of Russian attacks on Ukraine. In recent months, the region has suffered from constant bombing, mainly due to the announcement of reinforcement of weapons coming from the West to Ukraine.

A definite increase in offensive operations by the occupiers on the front in the east of our country has been observed. The situation has become more difficult,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

On the same day, senior European Union officials visited the city of Kiev, with the aim of talking about actions for Ukraine’s turn to the West.

Zelenskiy said he was working on anti-corruption measures to show that the country can credibly manage the billions of dollars in aid that countries can send.

In a post on Twitter, the head of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, said she had arrived in Kiev on Thursday, with more than 10 officials and an EU representative. “We are here together to show that the EU stands behind Ukraine more firmly than ever before. And to further deepen our support and cooperation.”

However, as Ukraine is a country in an armed conflict, the EU is afraid to admit it as a member state so quickly, and insists on the presentation of more anti-corruption measures.

Among the subjects dealt with during the European visit are the shipment of more weapons to the country, increased access to Ukrainian products by the EU, assistance in covering energy supplies, the imposition of more sanctions against Russia and the process of Russian leaders for war.

About 60 billion euros have already been earmarked for Ukraine. However, the EU does not expect to admit the country’s candidacy anytime soon.
