George Boldok, defender of the Greek national football team, dies
Greek football world ‘mourning’… “Deep sadness over sudden death”
George Boldog (Panathinaikos), who played as a defender for the Greek national soccer team, passed away at the age of 31. The Greek soccer world was deeply saddened by the sudden death of a young soccer player who was playing until last weekend.
According to foreign media such as Greek news agency ANA, Boldog was found collapsed in a swimming pool at his home on the 9th (local time) and received CPR, but ultimately died. The exact cause of death has not been revealed.
Boldog was found lying in the swimming pool of his home in Glypata, south of Athens, Greece, by his homeowner. This is because Boldog’s wife, who lives in England with her children, contacted his landlord when she could not contact him.
Local police reportedly found no significant injuries on the body. Police plan to determine the cause of death through an autopsy.
Born in 1993, Boldog was born in England, but holds Greek nationality as he inherited his grandmother’s Greek ancestry. He started his career at Milton Keynes (MK) Dons.
Ball Dog began to make his presence known in earnest when he joined Sheffield United in 2017. Boldog cried and laughed with the club for seven years, including helping Sheffield win promotion to the English Premier League (EPL) in the 2018-2019 season.
He left Sheffield when his contract expired last May and joined Panathinaikos in Greece. Boldog also played for the Greek national team in the Euro qualifying playoff match against Georgia until last March.
Boldog even started as a starter in the home game against Olympiacos last weekend, but this game would be his last.
Meanwhile, the Panathinaikos club said, “The club family mourns the sudden death of our club player George Boldog, who passed away at the age of 31. We express our sorrow and sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Ellada of the Greek Super Liga also said, “The entire Super Liga is deeply saddened by the sudden death of Panathinaikos and our national team player Boldog and expresses deep condolences to his family and loved ones.”
The Greek Football Association has asked UEFA, the governing body of European football, to allow players to wear black armbands during two Nations League games to commemorate Boldog’s sudden death.
