The Bundesliga soccer team Werder Bremen celebrated its third away win of the season on Sunday evening against the weak home team VfL Wolfsburg with 4:2 (1:1) and remains unbeaten abroad. In contrast, the “Wolves” remained without three points in their fourth home game of the season despite taking the lead.

Bremen, who climbed to eighth in the table, prevailed in the northern duel. Mitchell Weiser (45th + 5th), Felix Agu (51st), Marvin Ducksch (67th) and Marco Grüll (72nd) scored the goals for coach Ole Werner’s team. Tiago Tomas (19th) and Joakim Maehle (79th) scored for VfL Wolfsburg to take the lead. Coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team, where Patrick Wimmer was shown the red card (68th), slipped to 13th place in the table.

The VfL coach criticized his team clearly. “We have destroyed much of what we had built in the last few weeks,” he said in an interview with ARD. “A lot of things were just a little bit in the second half. You can’t defend like that.”

Understandably, Bremen goalscorer Weiser was in a better mood: “It was a very good game for us for almost the whole season.” When asked about the weakness of the Bremen team at home (one point, 0:6 goals), the Werder professional said: “We haven’t managed to play good offensive football at home yet. But I’m sure we’ll start doing it. that’s soon.” Next Saturday, the champions Bayer Leverkusen will be the guests.

Wolfsburg take the lead with a pinball goal

In Wolfsburg, the audience had little to offer in the first quarter of an hour – but a little later the floodlights came on and the chorus of the song “Rama Lama Ding Dong” rang out through the arena. Significantly, the “Wolves” lead came from a standard situation.

VfL captain Maximilian Arnold dragged the ball with his left foot towards the visitors’ goal during a corner from the right. Werder attacker Ducksch may have slightly changed the direction of the flight at the starting post – in any case, Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer missed the ball with his fist.

The ball hit the 29-year-old in the forehead instead, and from there the ball went through five meters of space. Wolfsburg defender Denis Vavro kicked the ball forward, Senne Lynen first saved on the line, but then Tiago Tomas pushed the ball over the line from close range – 1-0 for Wolfsburg (19th).

Weiser scores a deep equalizer in extra time

However, Zetterer prevented the score from making it 0-2 in the 39th minute when he was on target for Jakub Kaminski’s shot from a tight angle. And what came from Werder offensive? Nothing. Shortly before five minutes of stoppage time expired, Bremen, who played with a mourning ribbon in memory of their late honorary captain Dieter Burdenski, were there: After a nice cross from Ducksch, Weiser fired in from close range to make it 1-1 (45th + 5th) – the break stand.

Fifth yellow card for Arnold

VfL had to do without Arnold from the 42nd minute. The veteran fell hard after a header duel and suffered a serious back injury. Arnold was shown a yellow card by referee Daniel Schlager when he was substituted because everything was going too slow for him. It was the VfL captain’s fifth, meaning he will miss the game at FC St. Pauli.

Werder turns the game around through Agu

Bremen’s team was barely recognizable after the restart. Now we moved forward with determination. Ducksch had a great chance in the 48th minute, which he badly missed. However, the Hanseatic people persevered and it paid off.

VfL keeper Kamil Grabara was able to deflect a shot from Grüll on the right – into the path of the completely free Agu. The defender scored with a low shot, which Grabara didn’t look good on, to make it 2-1 (51st).

Red for Wolfsburg’s Wimmer – Bremen makes it 4:1

The guests were unstoppable after that. Ducksch increased the score to 3-1 with a volley (67′). And just a minute later, Wolfsburg’s chances of scoring anything worthwhile dwindled again. Shortly after being substituted, VfL professional Wimmer was shown a red card for a tackle in midfield against Grüll (68′). When the dirty player scored a 4-1 victory for Werder against the degenerate hosts (72′), it seemed that the game was already decided.

Joker VfL Maehle practices fruit cosmetics

But Wolfsburg’s joker Joakim Maehle briefly gave VfL hope with the 2:4 (79th minute). However, the hosts, who were even higher, were unable to make the encounter more exciting in the final stage.
