8BitDo Unveils Release Date for 64 Controller Compatible with Analogue 3D

Peripheral maker 8BitDo has announced the release date for its highly anticipated 64 Controller, designed for use with the upcoming Analogue 3D—a remake of the iconic Nintendo 64 that supports 4K output. Pre-orders for the $40 controller are now open, with shipping set for March 19. The controller is available in black or white to complement the Analogue 3D.

The peripheral appears to be based on 8BitDo’s Ultimate controller, featuring a single thumbstick and six control buttons—A, B, and the four C buttons. It includes four bumper buttons, and users can remap either trigger to function as the original N64 controller’s Z button, thanks to 8BitDo’s Ultimate software.

In a thoughtful design choice, the thumbstick is encircled by an octagonal gate, and the integrated Hall effect sensor along with a wear-resistant metal joystick ring greatly reduces the risk of stick drift. Additionally, the controller has built-in Rumble Pak functionality, compatible with both the Analogue 3D and the Nintendo Switch, as well as PC and Android devices.

The original trident-shaped Nintendo 64 controller has puzzled gamers for nearly three decades, raising questions about its ergonomics. This new design from 8BitDo presents a more intuitive option for those eager to relive N64 classics.

Pre-orders for the Analogue 3D also opened earlier this week. Currently, the black version is available. Notably, the console does not include a controller, requiring buyers to purchase one separately.

Expert Roundtable Discussion

Dr. Emily Carter – Gaming Behavioral Scientist

“The design of controllers significantly affects player experience. The shift to a more user-friendly and ergonomic design with the 64 Controller is a positive step, particularly for a nostalgic gaming audience.”

James Liu – Tech Reviewer and Gamer

“While I appreciate the fidelity to the original, I wonder if the lack of a central thumbstick might frustrate some veteran players. It will be interesting to see user feedback once it’s released.”

Sarah Jenkins – Video Game Historian

“The original N64 controller’s design was revolutionary for its time, but it didn’t age well. 8BitDo’s new controller could help bridge the gap between nostalgia and modern ergonomic standards.”
