The Ukrainian army acknowledged on Monday Russian “tactical successes” in the Kharkiv region (northeast), while Moscow announced on Sunday the control of four additional towns in this region bordering Russia during a ground operation that began on Friday and required the evacuation of thousands of people.
The Ukrainian General Staff acknowledged early Monday in a statement on Facebook that “the enemy is currently witnessing tactical successes,” adding that there are “continuous battles in the border city of Vovchansk,” which had a population of about 3,000 people before the current attack and where Moscow has mobilized “up to To five battalions,” according to Kiev.
This Russian progress comes at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow made a sudden cabinet reshuffle on Sunday evening and dismissed his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, after more than two years of battles in Ukraine, without a clear end to the conflict in sight.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “Defensive battles and fierce fighting continue on a large part of our borders. The idea behind the attacks in the Kharkiv region is to exhaust our forces and undermine the morale” of the Ukrainian army.
A statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense said, “Units of the ‘North’ group of forces advanced deep into the enemy’s defenses and liberated the towns of Gatishchi, Krasnoye, Morokhovets, and Olenikovo in the Kharkiv region.”
