BNP Leader Salahuddin Ahmed Returns to Bangladesh After 9 Years
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has returned to Bangladesh after nine years in exile. He arrived in Dhaka from Delhi, India on Sunday afternoon (August 11) at 2:30 pm.
BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan confirmed that Salahuddin Ahmed landed at the airport at the same time. He was greeted by a delegation including party Vice-Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, and his wife. Other notable figures present were Jahangir, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir, and several others.
Salahuddin’s return comes after a tumultuous legal battle that began in 2015 when he illegally entered India. He was eventually acquitted of the charges in 2018, but bureaucratic hurdles prevented him from returning home. He finally received a travel permit in August 2024 and is now able to set foot in his home country.
A prominent figure in the BNP, Salahuddin Ahmed served as the APS to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and was elected to Parliament in 2001. He held various government positions during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government. He was arrested in Meghalaya in 2007 and later became a member of the party’s standing committee while serving his sentence in India.
