Rodrigo Ribeiro, former Filmworks student, premieres his new short film Scar NO Virginia Film Festival on November 1st. The film explores the protagonist’s pain and dreams, reflecting the director’s personal experiences and featuring a technical team made up of AIC alumni.
How do you feel about the international premiere of your new short film?
I am very happy to premiere the film at a festival in the United States and to be one of the few Brazilian films at the festival together with the feature film I’m still here by Walter Salles.
The synopsis of the short talks about pain and memories. How did the idea for this story come about?
The short film portrays a grieving process that I witnessed myself. After thinking about this for a long time and going through all the stages of grief, I felt the need to talk about this difficult and painful feeling. Another strong point of the short film are the dreams. Use characters’ dreams as a way to visually portray what is happening in their unconscious, revealing their traumas, fears and memories.
It is interesting to know that part of the cast and technical crew are made up of former AIC students. How has this experience at AIC contributed to your career?
During the process of making the film, most of the technical team was made up of colleagues I met at AIC, both from my class and from other courses. The protagonist, Guilherme Douradohe also studied at AIC, and I met him thanks to other students’ projects. The actress Romualdo flows she was invited by me for her work in films like Doctor Gama, Colony and the clip Skin flowDo Kayode. The actor Eduardo Chagascelebrated for his work at the Satyros Theater, and Vittorio Lima they were discovered through social media searches.
The AIC has been a precious space for learning and friendship. I learned a lot from the teachers and met people who will be present in my personal and professional life. I hope to return soon to take other courses there.
What are your expectations regarding Cicatriz?
My expectation, as someone who was very interested in distribution when I was studying at AIC, has always been to give my short film a long trajectory of about two years. Starting from international festivals to gain visibility and then entering national festivals.
I believe that all of us who make short films must believe in our work and, as far as possible, show it to as many people as possible. And understand that each project has its time and its particularities when it comes to participating in festivals in Brazil and around the world.
