Merz doesn’t believe in gender parity in the cabinet

If Union candidate Merz becomes chancellor, he sees no reason for gender parity in the cabinet. In his eyes, this led to “crazy miscasts”. He also gives a name.

Union chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz has no plans to fill half of his cabinet with women if he wins the election. Merz said in the RTL/ntv program “ Frühstart ” that he doesn’t think much of proposals for a 50/50 gender balance. He gave what he saw as a concrete example: “That went so wrong in the last federal government with the defense minister,” said Merz.

The then Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) was repeatedly criticized and resigned at the beginning of 2023. Merz said that it was “such a blatant miscast” and that they didn’t want to repeat that. “We’re not doing women any favors either.”

At the same time, however, the CDU leader said that he was already trying to bring responsibility to women in the party and parliamentary group. This will also apply to a future government.
