by times news cr

The victims of the Colombian armed conflict now have until August 22, 2026 to make their statements for the victimizing events suffered from 1985 onwards, a term established in Law 2343 of 2023 and expanded by Law 2421 of 2024.

To this end, the Attorney General’s Office, through its delegate for the Follow-up to the Peace Agreement, as well as the Ombudsman’s Office and the municipal representatives have arranged the necessary measures so that these proceedings can be carried out at their headquarters located in throughout the national territory, as well as have the necessary information to guide people interested in the process.

This new deadline is an opportunity for victims of the conflict to receive information about their rights and the procedures available for them to access the National System of Comprehensive Care and Reparation for Victims.

For the Delegate Attorney for Monitoring the Peace Agreement, Diana Yolima Niño Avendaño, this new term given by the law allows “to provide the victims of the conflict with guarantees of reparation and non-repetition, measures to which due to different circumstances they had not been able to access previously. Also, it is a valuable opportunity to give them information and guidance on the different processes and mechanisms they can access.”

Additionally, the norm indicates that in any case the declaration for the events suffered during the conflict can be delivered up to three years after its occurrence, thereby establishing a prudential term for citizens to access the services and benefits for the victims.

According to figures from the Victims Unit, from December 29, 2023 (the date on which Law 2343 of 2023 was promulgated) until September 30, a total of 46,915 statements have been received.
