The UN mission’s election affairs official, Ahmed Al-Amiri, stressed the importance of youth participation in the voting process.
This came during the participation of 25 young women and men from various parts of Libya, yesterday, Tuesday, in a virtual training session on the electoral process, supervised by the Election Affairs Section of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
The mission explained on its official website that the training session touched on the concept and history of elections and their vital role in enabling citizens to manage the public affairs of their country, whether by choosing rulers and representatives from among several candidates, or by rejecting and accepting political proposals and decisions by voting. The participants also addressed the topic The upcoming municipal elections in Libya, which will include 60 municipalities in their first round and target approximately 210,000 male and female voters registered with the High National Elections Commission, and the use of biometric technology to speed up the electoral process and ensure its integrity.
Al-Amiri said: “The youth in Libya represent about 38% of the Libyan population, and they are a significant group, but their participation in the electoral process is weak for various reasons, some of which may be due to a lack of confidence in the institutions and authorities that previously elected, or a lack of sufficient knowledge of the electoral process.” “.
He added: “Hence our role in the mission to spread awareness and try to encourage young people to participate, whether in elections or candidacy, to make their voice heard and advance the political process in Libya.”
