We’ve been there several times his balls At the Vetró family, their yard shines with fantastic lighting during the advent period – these are the lights of christmas. Our visit this time was different: my photographer colleague Csaba Karnok and I thought we had already arrived, but we didn’t. In the area, 10-15 houses, gates, and yards are dressed in lights, perhaps the “most Christmassy” part of our county.
For the sake of the children
– We started twenty-six years ago, when the children were still small, and none of them were even born. it all started for their own sake, and year by year the decorations and decorative lighting became more and more. I like to do it – the originator, Kata Vetróné, started our conversation, mentioning that she is happy that more and more people are following her example, and that holiday lights are lit almost everywhere in the neighborhood. “It’s good for my soul,” he added. Two of the children help her to this day, 32-year-old Dávid and 21-year-old Máté – 29-year-old Lilla lives in England – and she can also count on her husband, László, who went up to the roof this year as well, “it’s true, I had to court him a bit”.
Balástya, the village of Christmas
– I’m serious, it’s worth visiting Balástya, there are more and more beautiful, tasteful decorative lights; and in our neighborhood, at Fecske Street, such houses touch each other - said Kata, a manicurist and pedicurist in civilian clothes. In the meantime, we walked and visited every part of the fairytale world created in the courtyard. Many people go there: they arrive on foot, by bicycle and by car. There was also a four-wheeled Christmas tree from the latter, with rows of lights lined up everywhere.Kata suddenly changed the subject: “I ran three half-marathons this year, I’m proud of myself, health is significant,” she declared.
– how has the community in Balástya participated in the Christmas light display over the years?

Q: Kata, can you tell us how your journey into creating these gorgeous Christmas lights in Balástya began?
Kata Vetróné: Absolutely! It all started twenty-six years ago, when my children were still young. At that time, none of them had even been born! The motivation was to create a magical experience for them during the Christmas season. As the years went by, the decorations and lights evolved, becoming more intricate and expansive.I find joy in this process—it’s truly good for my soul.
Q: It seems you have inspired quite a few people in your neighborhood to join in on the festivities. can you explain the change you’ve seen over the years?
Kata Vetróné: Yes, it’s heartwarming! Each year, more and more houses around us are adorned with beautiful and tasteful lights. It’s like an unspoken competition among neighbors, and the spirit of Christmas has definitely become contagious. It’s amazing to see people walking, biking, or driving to admire our decorated streets. We’ve created a little Christmas wonderland in Balástya.
Q: With your expertise in decorative lighting, what advice would you give to those wanting to create their own festive displays?
Kata Vetróné: Start with what makes you happy! Consider your personal style and how you want to express the festive spirit. Don’t hesitate to involve your family, as my sons often help me out. I recommend beginning small, than gradually adding more decorations as you go along. And remember, it’s not just about the lights; it’s about the joy and memories you create together.
Q: You mentioned your family contributing to the decorations. How has this experience impacted your family dynamics?
Kata Vetróné: My family plays a crucial role in this tradition! My sons, Dávid and Máté, still help me, while my daughter Lilla, who lives in England, also shares her spirit with us from afar. This project has always brought us closer together, reinforcing our bond during the holidays. And yes, I have to court my husband, László, a bit to get him to help decorate on the roof!
Q: Beyond the lights, you also mentioned a significant personal achievement this year. Can you elaborate on your health journey?
Kata Vetróné: certainly! I ran three half-marathons this year, which I’m incredibly proud of. Taking care of my health is essential as it allows me to keep up with the demands of my family, business, and, of course, the holiday celebrations. Integrating fitness into my life has made a noticeable difference in my energy levels and overall well-being.
