The film is based on a real-life death
The winner of the Rome International Documentary Film Festival was the film “1489” by Armenian director Shoghakat Vardanyan.
The film chronicles the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) through the experiences of a separated family: the Vardanyans. The screen conveys emotions, experiences, a sense of uncertainty and expectations after the loss of contact with his son and brother, Soghomon Vardanyan, 21, who was at war. Shogakat is the sister of the deceased Soghomon. And the film’s title – “1489” – is a reference to the number by which Vardanyan was listed as missing. Shoghakat filmed the entire process of searching for his brother, from the news of his disappearance at the front to the revelation of his remains. That’s why the film is so touching and tugs at your heartstrings. In 2023, the film has already received the main prize at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA). “A film that acts like a penetrating light that makes visible the enormous hidden internal landscape of pain,” is how experts later described the Armenian director’s work. Recognizing the film as “an unforgettable example of cinema as an act of love”. But despite this, the National Academy of Armenian Cinema refused to submit it to the Oscars.
