NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered compelling evidence suggesting that Mars may have once experienced a climate far warmer and wetter than previously imagined – potentially even tropical storms and rainfall. The findings, published on Thursday in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, detail the discovery of light-colored rocks scattered along Perseverance’s path. Early analysis by Perseverance’s instruments reveals striking similarities between the Martian kaolinite and terrestrial rocks found near San Diego, California, and in South Africa. While kaolinite can also form in hydrothermal systems – areas with hot water – the chemical signature of the Martian samples points definitively towards formation through extended periods of rainfall at lower temperatures.

The discovery raises a key question: where did these rocks originate? Researchers note there are no meaningful nearby rock outcroppings that could be the source. Perseverance landed in 2021 near the Jezero crater, which once held a lake approximately twice the size of Lake Tahoe.
“They’re clearly recording an incredible water event, but where did they come from?” questioned a co-author of the study and a professor of planetary science at Purdue University.”Maybe they were washed into Jezero’s lake by the river that formed the delta, or maybe they were thrown into Jezero by an impact and they’re just scattered there. We’re not totally sure.”
Satellite imagery has identified larger kaolinite deposits elsewhere on Mars, but these newly discovered fragments represent the first on-the-ground evidence of how these formations could have developed. A senior researcher stated, “And right now the evidence in these rocks realy points toward these kinds of ancient warmer and wetter environments.”
