Argentine Scientists Conclude Groundbreaking Deep-Sea Exploration of the Atlantic Ocean
A team of Argentine researchers is nearing the end of a landmark scientific expedition exploring the extreme ecosystems of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Today, Monday, January 5, marks the final day for live broadcasts from the ocean floor, continuing until approximately 5:00 p.m. local time.
The expedition, led by biologist Maria Emilia Bravo and comprising eleven researchers and students from the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (ExactasUBA), represents a significant milestone. This is the first time researchers from the faculty have led a mission aboard the research vessel Falkor (too). The team will conclude their journey on January 10, returning to Puerto Madryn.
The Falkor (too), operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI), is dedicated to studying some of the planet’s most remote and unexplored marine environments. The current focus is on chemosynthetic communities – unique ecosystems thriving in the ocean depths where sunlight cannot penetrate. These organisms survive by harnessing chemical energy from cold seeps, fissures on the seabed releasing methane gas.
Among eight expeditions charting the Southwestern Atlantic, three are spearheaded by Argentine scientists. This latest undertaking, which began on December 14, 2025, builds upon previous successful campaigns like “Echoes of two cannons” and “Underwater Oasis of the Mar del Plata Canyon: Continental Slope IV.” Like its predecessors, this expedition is sharing its discoveries in real-time through live streaming broadcasts.
