Harvard Men’s Hockey Faces Crucial Stretch, Celebrates Historic Coaching Milestone
Harvard University’s men’s hockey team is poised for a demanding four-day stretch, beginning with matchups against St. Lawrence and Clarkson this Friday and Saturday, culminating in a Monday afternoon contest against Union. This busy schedule comes as the Crimson prepare to honor head coach Ted Donato for achieving a program-record 325 career wins, and will also feature a mental health awareness game and a Youth Day event with postgame autographs.
The Crimson will face St. Lawrence at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Saturday evening clash with Clarkson, also at 7:00 p.m. The series concludes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a 4:00 p.m. puck drop against Union.

The Crimson enjoyed success on their North Country trip earlier this season, sweeping both Clarkson (2-1) and St. Lawrence (4-3) for the first time since the 2022-23 season. Harvard has historically dominated the series against St. Lawrence, holding a 69-45-9 all-time record, and has lost only twice to the Skating Saints since 2016, with the most recent loss occurring in 2023.
The series against Clarkson is more competitive, with the Golden Knights historically holding the edge (67-63-12). However, Harvard secured a crucial regulation win against Clarkson earlier this season thanks to a late goal from Casey Severo. Harvard has won two of the last three meetings against Clarkson, including a victory in the ECAC Quarterfinals last season.
Union presents a new challenge, as it will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Historically, Harvard leads the series against Union 39-22-6, but the Crimson have lost the last four matchups dating back to 2023.
Donato’s Historic Achievement
On December 3rd, Ted Donato etched his name into Harvard hockey lore, securing his 325th career win against Brown and surpassing Bill Cleary, his former coach, as the program’s all-time winningest coach. Donato now ranks 49th in NCAA history for career victories, and is one of only seven active coaches with 325 or more wins. “It’s a testament to the players and the support staff,” a senior official stated regarding Donato’s accomplishment.
International Impact & Key Players
Harvard’s roster boasts international talent, with Heikki Ruohonen recently returning from the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championships. Ruohonen, an alternate captain for the Finnish National Team, earned player of the game honors after scoring a crucial goal against the United States in the quarterfinals. Finland ultimately finished fourth in the tournament.
On the domestic front, Mick Thompson is making a significant impact, currently ranking 20th nationally in points per game (1.18) through 15 games. Thompson has also been consistently productive dating back to February 14th, averaging 1.28 points per game over the last 25 contests.
