Army Baseball Alum Derek Berg Invited to Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training
A promising step forward for the West Point baseball program, Derek Berg has received a non-roster invite to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ major league spring training camp.
The catcher is scheduled to report to Bradenton, Florida, alongside major league pitchers and catchers during the week of February 11, marking a significant milestone in his professional baseball career. Berg is entering his second full season within the Pirates’ minor league system, having demonstrated consistent progress since being drafted.
Last season, the 2024 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point showcased his versatility by appearing across three levels of the Pirates’ farm system. He began the year with Single-A Bradenton, progressed to High-A Greensboro, and ultimately concluded the season with Double-A Altoona. This rapid ascent highlights his adaptability and potential for continued growth.
Berg’s journey to professional baseball began in 2024 when the Pirates selected him in the 10th round, with the 294th overall pick, of the Major League Baseball Draft. He became the 21st graduate of West Point to be selected in the MLB Draft, continuing a proud tradition of athletic excellence at the academy.
Prior to his professional career, Berg distinguished himself as a leader for the Army Black Knights, captaining the team to an impressive sixth consecutive Patriot League Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Regional tournament as a senior. His collegiate success laid a strong foundation for his current trajectory.
