Casale Monferrato, Italy – A new dedicated dental unit for patients with complex needs has opened at the Santo Spirito Hospital, marking a significant step forward for inclusive healthcare in the Piedmont region. The specialized facility, the seventh operational unit within the hospital’s Odontostomatology department, will focus on prosthetic rehabilitation for individuals with disabilities and complex medical conditions. This advancement in dental care is thanks to a generous donation coordinated by the Rotary Club of Asti, in partnership with the Rotary International Foundation and several other Rotary Clubs throughout the province of Alessandria.
The demand for specialized dental care for patients with “Special Needs” – those with severe physical or psychological disabilities, or systemic illnesses like heart disease, kidney problems, or those undergoing cancer treatment or transplants – is often overlooked. These individuals require tailored approaches, sometimes including conscious sedation or general anesthesia, to receive necessary dental treatment. The new unit aims to address this gap, providing a comfortable and equipped space for these vulnerable patients.
A Collaborative Effort to Enhance Patient Care
The donation included a new prosthetic dental unit (dental chair) and a dedicated workstation complete with a cleaning unit and suction system with a micromotor – essential tools for enhancing clinical activity. The Rotary Club of Asti spearheaded the fundraising effort, collaborating with clubs in Alessandria, Canelli-Nizza Monferrato, Casale Monferrato, and Valenza. “The Rotary has a mission of service above all personal interest,” said Renzo Gai, President of the Rotary Club of Asti. “Being the lead organization on this project, together with the other Clubs in the Province of Alessandria and the District, makes us proud. Supporting the Casale facility, which also serves patients with disabilities in the province of Asti (like Anffas), means guaranteeing a fundamental right. It’s a gift that unites our communities in the spirit of concrete solidarity.”
Expanding Access to Specialized Dental Services
Dr. Gianluca Ferrari, head of the Odontostomatology department at ASL AL, explained that the department already provides second-level assistance across a vast provincial territory, from Alessandria to Acqui Terme, Tortona to Novi Ligure, and Casale Monferrato. They handle both outpatient treatments and complex surgical cases. “We have a team of 6 doctors and 4 dental hygienists working in six operating rooms,” Dr. Ferrari stated. “But often, after extensive dental work or extractions, prosthetic rehabilitation is necessary to ensure proper nutrition.”
Last year, the department completed approximately 2,000 prosthetic rehabilitation procedures. The new unit is designed to increase this number and reduce waiting lists. “To do this, it was necessary to create a dedicated environment, with an attached waiting area, which the General Management recently donated, deeming it suitable,” Dr. Ferrari added.

The inauguration of the new unit was welcomed by local officials, including Emanuele Capra, the Mayor of Casale Monferrato. “Every community grows and strengthens when those who are part of it choose to care for the common good,” Mayor Capra said. “The acquisition of the new dental unit represents a significant contribution to the quality of health services offered to our citizens, strengthening care and attention to the community. I thank the Rotary Club from the bottom of my heart, whose generosity transforms civic commitment into a real gesture for the benefit of all.”
Francesco Marchitelli, the General Director of ASL AL, emphasized the importance of flexible management models and collaborative partnerships in creating real value within the healthcare system. He highlighted the hospital’s growth as a regional reference point, demonstrating how these approaches can benefit the most vulnerable patients.

Federico Riboldi, the Regional Health Assessor of Piedmont, praised the inauguration as a symbol of a healthcare system that leaves no one behind. He emphasized the integration of clinical excellence at Santo Spirito Hospital with the support of community organizations, allowing for concrete responses to patient needs. “I thank the donors for choosing to invest in a service that directly impacts the quality of life of patients in our territory,” Riboldi stated.
