Aston Martin rolled out a sweeping 16-part upgrade package for the AMR26 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, seeking to lift the team off the back of the Formula 1 grid. Despite major chassis, aerodynamic, and weight-saving revisions, driver Fernando Alonso warned that no mid-season package can instantly bridge their multi-second deficit.
Formula 1’s most struggling constructor has finally arrived at a major turning point. Aston Martin unveiled its long-awaited B-spec car at the Hungaroring, introducing a comprehensive 16-part overhaul designed to rescue a disastrously slow campaign. The Silverstone-based team has managed just a single world championship point over the opening 10 rounds of the 2026 season, prompting a drastic strategic pivot in the factory.
Chief technical officer Adrian Newey admitted that the early-season reality forced a painful choice. Recognizing that the original AMR26 lacked inherent competitiveness, the team halted performance-related updates through the first half of the year. While rivals continuously bolted on incremental parts, Aston Martin froze its development to step back, understand its mechanical flaws, and target a comprehensive redesign for the European summer.
Inside the 16-Part AMR26B Overhaul
The heavily revised aerodynamic package touches nearly every surface of the car. At the front end, the team discarded its previous geometry in favor of a more slender nose that drops downward at the tip, bearing a strong visual resemblance to McLaren’s 2026 design philosophy. The front wing, endplates, and brake duct deflectors were completely reshaped to manage airflow structures moving downstream.

Underneath the chassis, four distinct floor updates were introduced to increase downforce load. The floor body features a redefined bargeboard construction in a shorter, trapezoidal shape, while the diffuser and floor edge have been re-engineered to generate vorticity ahead of the rear tires. Designers also lifted the lower underbite edge of the sidepod inlet to expand the undercut.
The rear wing assembly underwent an extensive redesign as well, featuring shortened chord lengths and trailing-edge furniture aimed at increasing cornering load while reducing straight-line drag. Behind the scenes, the team also focused heavily on shedding excess weight from the chassis to bring the car much closer to the official limit, addressing a penalty that had cost them precious lap time at every circuit.
Sober Expectations and a Tight Curfew Shift
Preparing the radical upgrade required extreme labor from the trackside crew. Aston Martin burned through its first curfew exemption of the 2026 season, keeping personnel inside the Hungaroring during the 14-hour overnight window between Thursday and Friday after the updated parts arrived late at the track.
Team figures have been careful to temper expectations, noting that verifying simulation data without the luxury of winter testing will take time. Trackside chief Mike Krack emphasized that the squad must learn how to extract the package’s full potential across the race weekend rather than expecting immediate miracles.

Alonso offered a particularly blunt assessment of the team’s prospects, pointing out that no mid-season development can wipe away a deficit that recently stretched past two seconds to the cars directly ahead.

Aston Martin confirmed that the Hungaroring debut is merely the opening phase of a broader recovery plan. Additional weight-saving measures remain in the pipeline for future races, and the team will benefit from extra wind tunnel and CFD time granted by its lowly position in the Constructors’ Championship under Formula 1’s Aerodynamic Testing Restrictions.

Crucially, the Honda power unit installed in the car this weekend is not yet the Japanese manufacturer’s latest specification. Honda is scheduled to introduce its updated power unit at the Dutch Grand Prix immediately following Formula 1’s four-week summer break.
Whether the combined pairing of Newey’s revamped aerodynamic chassis and Honda’s upcoming engine evolution can finally drag Aston Martin away from the back of the grid depends entirely on how quickly the team unlocks the data from its new parts.
