Sony Santa Monica announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that God of War Laufey will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. The title shifts the series’ focus to Kratos’ wife, Faye, while the studio simultaneously confirmed a subsequent Kratos-led game that connects directly to Laufey’s story.
The announcement arrives as February 2027 shapes up to be a congested window for AAA releases. God of War Laufey will launch just days after Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and shortly before Persona 4 Revival. It also lands exactly one week before the February 23 release of Fable, which will be available on both Xbox and PS5.
The Everywhen and the Role of Faye
Departing from the Ghost of Sparta as the central protagonist, this chapter follows Faye—also known as Laufey the Just. After her death in the 2018 reboot, the story reveals she was transported to the Everywhen, an afterlife for gods of various religions. This marks the first time the series will feature deities from outside the Greek and Norse pantheons.
Early gameplay glimpses from a June 2026 State of Play showcase depict Faye battling fallen gods, including Sekmet of the Egyptian pantheon and Begtse, a Tibetan god of war. To aid her, Faye is joined by Phranque, a talking gelatinous cosmic cube, and Rue, the ribbons of a sword. The game’s combat is described as faster-paced than the series’ recent entries.
Kratos’ Future and the Sequential Narrative
While Faye takes center stage, Kratos is not entirely absent. Gameplay reveals show Kratos and Atreus burning Faye’s body, and Kratos later appears briefly to aid Faye during her imprisonment. However, the studio clarified that these appearances are limited because Kratos is busy with the events of God of War Ragnarök.

Barlog confirmed that a new Kratos-led game is already in development and will follow the release of Laufey. This upcoming title will tie directly into the events of Faye’s journey. While a release date for the Kratos sequel has not been set, the studio’s official social media account emphasized that Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him.
Physical Media and the 2028 Digital Shift
A critical detail for collectors is that God of War Laufey will ship with physical discs. This is a significant timing window, as Sony has declared that all games launching in January 2028 and beyond will be digital-only. This makes Laufey one of the final first-party PS5 exclusives to receive a physical edition before the production of disc-in-boxes ceases.
Market Stakes and Fan Reception
The decision to launch on February 16 puts Sony in a strong position against Microsoft’s Fable. Because Fable is a multiplatform release arriving on both Xbox and PS5 a week later, PlayStation users may still be immersed in Laufey’s world when Fable debuts. For Xbox, the stakes are higher; Fable is returning after nearly 17 years and is a Day One launch on Xbox Game Pass.
