Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to ensure the full implementation of the Gaza ceasefire and the peace framework endorsed by the Council. Speaking during an open debate on the Middle East, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, warned that delays risk irreparably undermining prospects for a lasting peace and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Pakistan Urges UN Security Council to Ensure Full Gaza Peace Plan Implementation
Islamabad welcomed the initiative advanced by US President Donald Trump in coordination with eight Arab and OIC countries. Ambassador Ahmad stated that Pakistan would actively participate in the consultative process to support a sustainable resolution, alleviate civilian suffering, and achieve a comprehensive peace consistent with United Nations resolutions.
Humanitarian Crisis and Conditions on the Ground
Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, the Pakistani envoy noted that the Occupied Palestinian Territory remains in dire straits. According to official figures cited at the Mashriq TV, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire took effect. Furthermore, 59 percent of Gaza’s population continues to face crisis-level food insecurity.
Ahmad pointed out that nearly two million people remain confined to just 30 percent of Gaza’s territory under catastrophic living conditions. He also raised concerns over reports regarding the construction of a massive earthen barrier across the enclave, which could further entrench Israeli control over nearly 70 percent of the territory.
West Bank Developments and Core Priorities Outlined
Addressing the situation in the occupied West Bank, the ambassador criticized continued Israeli settlement expansion, the establishment of new outposts, and rising settler violence. He warned that these actions, alongside plans such as the E-1 settlement project, alter the demographic and geographic character of the territory and pose a direct assault on the two-state framework.
To address the crisis, Ahmad outlined several immediate priorities for the Security Council:
- Full implementation of the Gaza peace plan and ceasefire commitments.
- An immediate halt to all Israeli settlement activities and a rejection of annexation or forced displacement attempts.
- International protection for the Palestinian people and accountability for crimes against civilians.
- The unconditional release of withheld Palestinian revenues so the Palestinian Authority can continue delivering public services.
Post-Conflict Governance and Regional Stability
Meanwhile, representatives from various US-led Board of Peace bodies have been meeting in Cyprus and Cairo to prepare the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a committee of Palestinian technocrats intended to replace Hamas as governors of the enclave. Board envoy Nickolay Mladenov noted that Hamas’s refusal to surrender its weapons remains the primary obstacle to the committee entering Gaza.
During his address, Ambassador Ahmad also touched on broader regional concerns, reiterating support for UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in Lebanon, respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, and a Yemeni-led political process. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the security and sovereignty of Saudi Arabia while condemning attacks against commercial shipping.
