Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) and the ONCE Social Group are distributing two million pairs of certified solar eclipse glasses free of charge to ensure public safety during the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. The event marks the first total solar eclipse visible in Spain in over 120 years, according to thelocal.es.

Distribution Channels and Availability
The distribution is split between two primary entities. The ONCE Social Group will provide 1.7 million pairs through its nationwide network of kiosks and lottery vendors starting Monday, August 3. Distribution at these locations is strictly in-person and subject to availability; there is no online form or national reservation system, as reported by Russpain.
The remaining 300,000 pairs are managed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). These will be supplied to research centers, higher education institutions, and science museums. Participating venues include:
- Museo Interactivo de la Música de Málaga (MIMMA)
- Parque de las Ciencias de Andalucía in Granada
- Museo Aragonés de Paleontología in Teruel
- Bioparc Acuario de Gijón
- Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos in Tenerife
- Museo Elder in Las Palmas
Additional regional efforts are also underway. The Government of Asturias has distributed more than 50,000 glasses via tourist offices and town halls, with another shipment of nearly 52,000 pairs arriving in August. In Madrid, the City Council is providing glasses at the Madrid Planetarium, Madrid History Museum, San Isidro Museum, Conde Duque, and local libraries. In Valencia, València Sostenible is offering one pair per person at the Climate Change Observatory and Energy Offices in the Torrefiel, Aiora, and Parc de l’Oest neighborhoods. Additionally, Caja Rural Aragón bank is distributing 60,000 glasses through its branches.
The “Trio of Eclipses” and Accessibility
This initiative is part of a broader plan to address the Trio of Eclipses,
a series of three major solar events visible from Spain between 2026 and 2028. To coincide with these, the ONCE Social Group will print five million special lottery coupons for each of the following dates: August 12, 2026; August 2, 2027; and January 26, 2028.
The campaign, titled «Una vista única. Cuídala», includes accessibility measures. The ONCE Social Group is adapting educational resources for people with other disabilities and those with visual impairments. FECYT is supplementing the glasses distribution with public engagement activities and educational materials available at trioeclipses.es.
Safety Standards and Viewing Guidelines
Officials emphasize that only glasses certified to the ISO 12312-2 standard (specifically «EN ISO 12312-2:2015») are safe for direct solar viewing. Glasses marked only with «ISO 12312-1» are not safe. The public is warned that regular sunglasses, X-rays, CDs, or homemade filters cannot prevent eye damage.
To avoid irreversible retina damage, which ophthalmologists note can occur in seconds without pain, the following precautions are advised:
- Inspect glasses against the light for scratches, punctures, or cracks before use; discard any damaged units.
- Put glasses on before looking at the sun and remove them only after looking away.
- Limit direct viewing to short intervals; the National Geographic Institute recommends not exceeding one minute at a time.
- Never look at the sun through telescopes, cameras, or binoculars unless a professional solar filter is fitted to the front lens.
According to NASA, the only time the sun can be viewed directly without protection is during the brief period of totality when the moon completely covers the sun.
