Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that an unidentified drone entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded 100 meters inside the border from the direction of Romania at 8:10 a.m. on August 8, 2026. The incident occurred near the Kardam border crossing, resulting in no casualties or infrastructure damage.
The device landed in a sunflower field, according to Prime Minister Rumen Radev. While the area was immediately cordoned off, the Prime Minister confirmed there were no injuries to people and no damage to the building fund or general infrastructure.
The Kardam Border Incident and Detection Gaps
The explosion took place in a sensitive corridor, situated 200 meters from the former border checkpoint between Bulgaria and Romania at Kardam and 1,000 meters from a Bulgarian compressor station on the Trans-Balkan pipeline. The drone was also reportedly 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station, according to reports from Club ‘Z.
Detection of the craft was fragmented. Romanian Border Police registered the sound of the drone, which was followed by a loud blast heard by the Bulgarian Border Police unit in General Toshevo. Despite this, the device remained undetected by radar systems in both Bulgarian and Romanian airspace. Rumen Radev noted that the Combined Air Operations Center in Torrejón provided no information on the craft.

Radev explained that these drones are difficult to detect due to their small size and low-altitude flight patterns, which prevent sufficient radar coverage density.
Defense Mobilization and the Shahed Connection
Rumen Radev stated that the drone is not a toy drone, this is a larger drone and noted that the intensity of the blast indicates the device was carrying a payload. This follows a pattern of recent activity in the region; Radev reminded officials that Romania recently shot down three Shahed-type drones, which are commonly used by Russia.
In response to the regional threat, Bulgaria has shifted its air defense posture. Minister of Defense Dimitar Stoyanov clarified that until July 31, 2026, airspace was guarded via a traditional scheme using MiG-29s and anti-aircraft missile complexes. However, starting at 9:00 a.m. on July 31, Bulgaria strengthened airspace observations by deploying additional forces and means, including:
- Cougar helicopters
- Su-25 aircraft
Despite these increased measures, the August 8 drone still managed to penetrate the border, prompting Radev to order the relocation of Border Police forces and drone-fighting equipment from the Turkish border to the Romanian border.
Security Council Response and NATO Escalation
Following the crash, the Prime Minister convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council. The session included the ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Finance, alongside the heads of Defense, DANS, DAR, and DATO. Rumen Radev emphasized that security for strategic objects across the country has been tightened, and anti-drone capabilities have been activated where available.
The incident is set to move from a national security concern to an international diplomatic issue. Next week, the North Atlantic Council will meet to discuss regional airspace violations. Bulgaria intends to raise the specific question of the drone that exploded on Bulgarian soil.
The immediate priority for the units from the Ministry of Defense and National Police currently on-site is the final identification of the drone type. While photographic material has been collected, officials have not yet released a final determination on the craft’s origin or specific model.
