Mexico allocated nearly 10 percent of its ChatGPT messages to multimedia content during the second quarter of 2026, surpassing the global average of 7.8 percent, according to usage statistics released by OpenAI. The data highlights a rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence adoption across Latin American consumer markets.
OpenAI Signals Reveals Country-by-Country Usage Patterns
OpenAI published its first set of country-by-country statistics detailing how individuals interact with ChatGPT. The data, distributed under the title OpenAI Signals, aggregates message patterns across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts used primarily by individual consumers. While text-based tasks like practical guidance, writing, and information searches still dominate overall platform volume, multimedia generation has emerged as the fastest-growing category globally.
That global surge follows the April release of ChatGPT Images 2.0, which propelled multimedia activities—spanning the creation, analysis, and recovery of visual files—to an average of 7.8 percent of worldwide messages. Mexico outpaced that baseline by roughly two full points. A parallel look at regional figures shows neighboring Latin American nations recording similarly high engagement with visual and analytical tools, with Brazil reaching 11.8 percent and Colombia registering 10.5 percent.
Broad Adoption Metrics Across Mexico and Latin America
The multimedia metrics align with a broader upward trajectory in generative artificial intelligence adoption throughout Latin America. Peru climbed 17 positions in the global ranking of ChatGPT messages per inhabitant between the first and second quarters of 2026, while Uruguay advanced 16 spots and Costa Rica moved up 15 places, according to OpenAI’s metrics.
Consumer data from the Microsoft AI Economy Institute indicates that 20.1 percent of the Mexican population aged 15 to 64 utilized some form of generative AI product during the first quarter of 2026. That figure sits above the 17.8 percent global average tracked by the institute. Adoption among Mexican users has climbed from 16.7 percent during the first half of 2025 to 17.8 percent in the second half of that year.
Enterprise Penetration Lagging Behind Individual Growth
While consumer usage accelerates on personal devices, corporate deployment within specific domestic sectors tells a different story. An analysis from the Centro México Digital, built on data from the Censos Económicos 2024, examined 33,316 economic units within Mexican manufacturing and found that only 4.8 percent of enterprises employing more than 10 workers use artificial intelligence.
That industrial adoption rate fractures further by business size. Medium-sized manufacturing enterprises show a penetration rate of 7.8 percent, whereas small businesses drop to just 1.2 percent.
Infrastructure Strain and Shifting Work Patterns
The expanding footprint of artificial intelligence is already exerting pressure on corporate telecommunications architecture. Research from Cisco and Foundry projects that traffic linked to artificial intelligence workloads in Mexico will surge 222 percent over the next three years, outpacing a projected global increase of 209 percent. To accommodate that growth, 71 percent of surveyed Mexican organizations believe their corporate networks will hit capacity limits within two years, while 82 percent acknowledge they need upgrades to support current and future AI loads.

Platform analytics also reveal how utility drives behavior. Users are more than twice as likely to leverage ChatGPT for production tasks—such as programming, editing, and analysis—when operating inside a professional environment compared to personal use. Outside of work hours, informational queries and general guidance dominate. Furthermore, demographic engagement is shifting: users over the age of 35 increased their message share in nearly every analyzed country over the past year, lifting their global participation by roughly five percentage points.
