A bittersweet Ramadan

by time news

As usual, Moroccans are already rejoicing as the holy month of Ramadan approaches. The smells of small traditional dishes are already invading our homes. The souks are full of the flagship foods of this period, including dates, traditional pastries, or anything that can please our taste buds.

Preparations are nevertheless accompanied this year by great bitterness linked to the soaring prices of basic foodstuffs, which have reached records not seen for several years.

Thus, low- or middle-income Moroccans find themselves confronted all alone with this rise in the prices of several basic necessities, in particular meat, the price of which offered by butchers has exceeded 100 dirhams per kilogram, not to mention eggs. and some vegetables that are currently offered at exorbitant prices, and which years ago were available to everyone. So what about citizens without a fixed income or without a job?

The high prices of staple foods are a heavy burden for Moroccan families, who find themselves facing considerable expenses and straining their purchasing power. A situation which the least we can say is that it is worrying and threatens the stability of Moroccan households.

Moroccan citizens are trying despite the circumstances to preserve their customs and traditions related to the holy month, hoping that the government will quickly find solutions to overcome this unprecedented price spike.
