At least 16 people, including six minors, died and 26 others were injured this Saturday when a bus overturned in northern Nicaragua, according to local authorities and media reports in the last few hours.
The bus, with 70 passengers, overturned and collided with a fence on Saturday after “losing direction” in the Mancera Bridge located in the municipality of Matagalpa, about 130 kilometers north of Managuasaid the vice president, Rosario Murillo, on the official channel 4 of local television.
“But we can confirm that more than 16 brothers are dead and that more than 26 are injured and some very seriously injured“said Murillo.
The vice president, who expressed solidarity on behalf of the Nicaraguan Government, explained that, according to the information, “the bus lost direction and overturned on the Mancera bridge in Rancho Grande. Some say it was going to high speed. “We can neither confirm nor deny that.”
Among the deceased minors, he noted, there are “a little girl of 4 years old, (…) a little boy of 11 (…) of 8, and a little boy of 11”, in addition to two others whose age has not been detailed. There are also minors among the injured.
Some local media indicate that already 13 deceased have been identified.
“Here we have a tragedy that perhaps could have been avoided. We don’t know,” said Murillo, wife of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega.
