Demonstrators denouncing the disputed results of the legislative elections in Serbia attacked Belgrade town hall on Sunday, breaking windows with stones, before being pushed back by the police, noted an AFP journalist.

Protesters threw stones, sticks and eggs at the building, breaking windows and attempting to force entry, but were repelled by police forces inside.

The police, who notably used pepper spray, are in front of the main entrance to the town hall, behind their shields.

Serbia held municipal and legislative elections on December 17, in which the right-wing nationalist party of President Aleksandar Vucic was declared the winner.

The vote attracted widespread criticism after a team of international observers – including representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) – denounced a series of “irregularities”, including “the vote buying” and “ballot stuffing”.

Hundreds of people demonstrated daily in front of the Serbian electoral commission and international condemnations poured in.
