“A 74-year-old man who lost his wife, sister, and four children in a traffic accident overcomes his grief by protecting traffic safety for 36 years.”

On the 3rd (local time), Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) published an article with this title and introduced the story of Zhang Aiqing (74), who lives in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.

Zhang Aiqing lost his older sister in a car accident in 1990. Before he could overcome his grief, he lost his wife and all four children in another car accident in 1996.

Although he felt a sense of loss due to the deaths of his family members, he chose to volunteer as a traffic control worker because he felt that he could not just stay at home missing his departed family members.

For 36 years, he has been taking the bus to work in front of Kunming Yan’an Hospital every day at 6 a.m. to direct traffic. I chose that hospital to repay the hospital that provided varicose vein surgery for free.

On days when he is not volunteering, he campaigns on the streets holding wooden boards with messages warning of human trafficking. He is known to have caught more than 300 thieves and human traffickers.

Zhang Ai-qing, who does not have a proper income, mainly eats leftover rice and ramen, and can only eat meat once a month.

In particular, he is said to be using the money he earns by collecting empty bottles from the streets to help poor students.

It is said that the words “It is never too late to serve your citizens” are written on the wall of the house where he lives.

He is hearing impaired and wears a hat with ‘Hearing Impaired’ written on it to direct traffic. Local residents call him ‘Kunming’s Good Samaritan.’

“He is trapped in the tragedy of 1996, but he is doing his best to help others move forward,” said one netizen who saw him.

Another netizen quoted the famous saying, “The world kissed his soul with pain, but he came back with a song.”
