Game Freak has confirmed that it has suffered a cyber attack in which, through “unauthorized access”, malicious actors gained access to its server and employee personal information and other information related to the Pokémon saga, including new games, designs of the beta characters and code name of the next Nintendo Switch console.
The video game company, main developer of the Pokémon franchise, has confirmed that during the month of August this year it suffered “unauthorized access” to its servers, the consequences of which are starting to be noticed now, when a large amount has sensitive data was shared, in a major data leak that users dubbed “Teraleak.”
The attack suffered in August, on the one hand, affected 2,606 employees, both former and current, as shared by Game Freak through a statement. Personal data such as company name and email address were leaked. In this sense, the developer stated that it will individually contact those who were affected by the cyber attack.
In addition to personal information, attackers took advantage of this cyber attack to steal and leak information related especially to the Pokémon saga. Specifically, internal data has been shared that includes everything from character designs to the source code of several chapters in the franchise.
Leaked source code of old and future games
As shared this weekend by some users in posts on Reddit and (Soulsilver), as well as data relating to the upcoming Pokémon video game, which bears the code name “Gaia”.
References to a new online multiplayer Pokémon video game called “Synapse” were also found, as well as the code name for the upcoming Pokémon Legends: ZA video game, called “Ikkaku”. Another leak includes the code name for the upcoming Nintendo Switch console, known internally as “Ounce.”
Likewise, information has leaked about a possible sequel to the Detective Pikachu film and other planned productions of the saga, including a new anime series. Additionally, designs for multiple Pokémon beta characters were shown.
However, it must be taken into account that, despite having acknowledged the cyber attack suffered in August, Game Freak did not refer to these leaks in the press release. For their part, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have also not commented on the matter.
Despite all this, Game Freak stressed that it has already carried out the “rebuild and re-inspection of the server” and that it will continue to work to strengthen security measures and prevent possible similar cyber attacks from happening again. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved,” concluded the developer.
