Many French people did not meet this looming deadline.
September and its heavy expenses related to the start of the school year are over, but that doesn’t mean that families’ wallets can breathe. Another debit line will also appear on your bank account again in October. Within a few days, 10 million French people will be exposed to a direct debit, called “DGFIP Direct Debit”.
This will be recorded even if you have not made any spend with a merchant with this name, nor the amount indicated. But don’t panic, it’s not fraud. And for good reason it is the Directorate General of Public Finances.
These are in fact the taxes that will be used directly on your current account to pay off your debt following your tax return. Many French people still have to pay a balance to the tax authorities, in addition to the withholding tax already in force throughout the year. On average, approximately 2000 euros more must be paid to the DGFiP.
For people who still have to pay 301 euros or more to the tax administration, a payment divided into several installments has been automatically arranged, with equal amounts each time. Therefore, this will represent a deduction of at least 75 euros. If you have 1200 euros left to pay, four deductions of 300 euros are made.
These deadlines are nothing new as the Financial Administration communicated them to the taxpayers concerned in the IRPEF notice, sent at the end of July. However, with the mail arriving during the summer holidays and the start of the school year having passed, many have forgotten the dates. For those with debts exceeding 300 euros, the second withdrawal is scheduled for Friday 25 October, one month after the first automatic tax withholding. The other dates are already known: Monday 25 November for the third; then Friday 27 December for the final deadline.
