In the Gaza Strip they revealed that an impressive mosaic floor dating back to the Byzantine period was found in the city. The floor was found by a farmer who planted trees there, and researchers describe it as “the most beautiful mosaic floor discovered in Gaza”. Hamas plans to issue a statement regarding the mosaic in the coming days
Yesterday (Friday), the Ministry of Antiquities in the Gaza Strip revealed that a mosaic floor was found in the Gaza Strip, the construction of which dates back to the Byzantine period, between the seventh and ninth centuries AD.
The mosaic was discovered a few months ago by a Gazan farmer who planned to plant olive trees on the spot, about a kilometer from the border with Israel. The farmer dug in the area, and when he saw that his excavation encountered something difficult, he continued digging with his son until he uncovered the entire impressive mosaic.

In the mosaic created during the Byzantine period, 17 paintings of animals are displayed that were clearly and well preserved. “This is the most beautiful mosaic floor discovered in Gaza, both in terms of the graphic representation and in terms of the complexity of the geometry. Mosaic floors with such a wealth of colors have never been discovered there,” said René Alter of the French School of Biblical and Archeology in Jerusalem.
According to the international engagement, Hamas plans to issue a statement regarding the mosaic that was discovered in the coming days.
