Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios plans to return to the Abu Dhabi courts in December, aiming to win a Grand Slam and “silence” those who doubt him. The former world No. 13 has played just one singles match on the ATP Tour in two years, after suffering knee, foot and wrist injuries.
The 29-year-old, who last met in June 2023, has repeatedly hinted he will retire but told News Corp’s Code Sports program on Monday he would return for the World Tennis League tournament exhibition in December before to try his luck at the Australian Open in January.
“I’m coming back because there’s something that keeps me in the game,” says the man who early in his career became known for his outbursts and nervous breakdowns in the middle of a match. I beat pretty much everyone in front of me, I got to the final of a Slam, I won a doubles title in a Slam, I won more titles and I won money. »
Not enough, however, for people to speak well of him and forget his recurring escapades. So, the solution is found. “I think the only thing I’m aiming for now is a Grand Slam,” adds the Canberra native. I think it’s the one thing that will finally shut people up. This will be my deep motivation. »
Kyrgios, who worked as a television commentator during his absence, reached his only Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2022, losing in four sets to Serbian Novak Djokovic.
