As announced since Monday, Jean-Louis Gasset is the new coach of Olympique de Marseille. The former Ivory Coast coach takes over from Gennaro Gattuso, who was dismissed this Monday following another defeat in Brest (1-0) and whose departure was made official a little earlier this Tuesday .

“It is a huge honor for me to join this legendary club that is Olympique de Marseille,” Gasset explained in a press release from his new club. I can’t wait to start working with this group to prepare for the next deadlines and give the best of ourselves. »

Gasset, 70, already knows Ligue 1 very well, having notably coached AS Saint-Étienne (from 2017 to 2019) and Bordeaux (2020-2021). He was also Laurent Blanc’s assistant at PSG between 2013 and 2016. He had held a similar position with the 1998 world champion in Bordeaux (2007 to 2010), then with the French team (2010 to 2012).

During the last African Cup of Nations, he resigned during the competition, leaving the Elephants to recover and move towards the title.

“Recognized for his tactical science, his sense of relationships with players, his ability to mobilize the different groups he has trained and his work culture, the native of Montpellier also had the opportunity to put his skills to the international level at the service of the Ivorian selection, the French team and Espanyol Barcelona,” underlines OM in its press release.
