The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) informed the agency LETA that VUGD received a call on Sunday evening to the Rauna parish of Smiltene district, where a car had crashed.
Rescuers freed one person who was under the car and handed it over to medics, who pronounced the person dead. Another person got out of the car under his own power and was handed over to medics.
According to the State Police, on January 5 at 10:38 p.m. in the Rauna parish of Smiltene county, at the 13th kilometer of the Priekuļi-Rauna highway, a “VW” car left the roadway and overturned. One person was injured in the road traffic accident, and one person died. The police have started a criminal case and an investigation is underway. In the past 24 hours, a total of 63 road traffic accidents were registered in the country and four people were injured in them, including one cyclist.
In the field of road traffic, the police have drawn up 401 administrative violation protocols, including 178 times the permitted driving speed was exceeded and 12 aggressive drivers were caught.
Three vehicle drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol at the wheel, two of them were heavily drunk, for which criminal liability is expected.
