A rare copy of the US Constitution will be auctioned

A rare copy of the U.S. Constitution, printed 237 years ago, will be auctioned off Thursday night in North Carolina, the Associated Press reported.

Brunk Auctions is selling the copy, the only one of its kind believed to have belonged to a private individual. The minimum bid of $1 million has already been offered.

The copy was printed after the United States Constitutional Convention in 1787 completed drafting a proposed framework for the country’s government and sent it to the First American Government Congress with a request that it be sent to the states for popular ratification. This is one of about 100 copies printed by Secretary of Congress Charles Thomson. Only eight of these are known to still exist, and the remaining seven are in the public domain.

The auction house is not sure how much the document might sell for, as there is very little to compare it to. The last time a copy of the Constitution was sold was $400 in 1891, BTA reported.

The auction was originally scheduled for September 28, but the auction house postponed it because of Hurricane Helene, which caused damage in North Carolina.
